Sterilizing the bottle kills bacteria and other microbes that can be harmful to your body. It's a good idea to sterilize the bottles you plan to reuse to store food. The same sterilization method can also be used to sterilize feeding bottles and other containers made of glass or hard plastic. 1. Wash your hands. Before starting any method of disinfection, make sure your hands are clean. Wash your hands with mild soapy water.

2. Wash the bottle. Wash the bottle inside and out with mild soapy water. Make sure to scrub the grooves at the neck vigorously to remove all traces of food, then rinse the bottle with water.

3. If you plan to sterilize the caps, wash them thoroughly as well. If the bottles you're rinsing have lumps inside, soak them in a mild bleach solution (one cup of bleach to one gallon of water) to soften the lumps, then wash with soapy water and rinse the bottles.
